Jagannathan Thirumalai

SASTRA Deemed University, Thanjavur, India

Jagannathan Thirumalai received his Ph.D. from Alagappa University, Karaikudi in 2010 and was awarded a post-doctoral fellowship at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), Republic of Korea, in 2013. He was an assistant professor of physics at B.S. Abdur Rahman University, Chennai, India from 2011 to 2016. Currently, he is a Senior Assistant Professor and Head of the Physics Department, at SASTRA Deemed University, Kumbakonam (T.N.), India. His research interests focus on luminescence, self-assembled nanomaterials, thin film optoelectronic devices, and spintronics applications. He has published more than 65 SCOPUS/SCI-indexed papers and ten book chapters and has edited seven books, six for IntechOpen. His research activities are funded by the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) of India.

Synthesis, Luminescence and Magnetic Properties of Novel Fe0.5Gd0.5(MoO4)1.5:Eu3+ Micro/Nano (3D) Structures

The controlled synthesis of Fe0.5Gd0.5(MoO4)1.5:Eu3+ microcrystals (self-aggregated 3D superstructures) using hydrothermal method by employing PVP as surfactant along with the state of the art of this field at present. By varying the reaction time, we have reported the morphology selection and the condition to derive novel nanoparticle sheathed bipyramid-like morphology. The rest of the parameters like, molar ratio between initial precursor / surfactant and temperature were kept as constant. The Fe0.5Gd0.5(MoO4)1.5:Eu3+ microcrystals are found to be an excellent matrix for photoluminescence property and the Eu3+ ion serves as a good red emitting luminescent center. Further, room temperature (RT) magnetic properties of Fe0.5Gd0.5(MoO4)1.5:Eu3+ were investigated in detail.

Influence of Alkali Metal Ions on Luminescence Behaviour of Ca0.5R1-x(MoO4)2:xLn3+ (R = Y, La), (Ln = Eu, Tb, Dy) Pulsed Laser Deposited Thin Phosphor Films

Thin phosphor films of Ca0.5R1-x(MoO4)2:xLn3+, M+ (R3+ = La, Y), (Ln3+ = Eu, Tb, Dy) (M+ = Li+, K+ and Na+) were deposited on quartz substrates by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique by ablation of a stoichiometric monocrystal target. The deposition was carried out using an Nd‐YAG laser (λ = 1064 nm) in an ultra‐high vacuum (UHV) with an oxygen back pressure of 300 mTorr at 600°C substrate temperatures. The laser‐ablated films are optically active, as verified by the photoluminescence (PL) spectra, and the films exhibit smooth Stark levels. The photoluminescence of the Ca0.5R1-x(MoO4)2:xLn3+, M+ phosphors properties reveals characteristic visible emissions. Further, the co‐doping of alkali metal chlorides MCl (M = Na, K, Li) into the Ca0.5R1-x(MoO4)2:xLn3+, M+ phosphor greatly improves the luminescence intensity, which can be explained by charge compensation effect. The fluorescence lifetime and photometric coordinates are discussed in detail.
